COMMUNITY OUTREACH CLINIC INITIATIVE
  Objective

In order to reach those clients who may not be able to visit BLM centres for the various Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare services offered, BLM is working jointly with the Ministry of Health and Population through the Community Outreach Clinic Initiative.

Under these centres, BLM is able to provide various family planning methods to the poor Malawian population in the various communities. The majority of these people benefiting from the Community Outreach Clinic Initiative are those who cannot afford transport costs from the various distant places to the nearest BLM clinic due to high poverty levels and poor road infrastructures.

In so doing, BLM complements the public sector health service delivery system especially in the provision of permanent family planning methods that are not readily available in the government health centers.
  Working Relationship with Government

Before embarking on the Community Outreach Clinic Initiative, BLM held a series of discussions with Ministry of Health and Population officials before the initiative was finalized.

The various services under this initiative are provided in rural government owned health centers and where necessary, BLM embarks on rehabilitation works of the service room to make sure that it meets desired high quality standards.

In addition, the provision of the services in the various health centers is done at times jointly by BLM and Ministry of Health officials.
  Progress to Date

To-date the Outreach community clinic network totals 202 sites

  Challenges

The major challenges for the Community Outreach Clinic Initiative are the poor road infrastructure in most rural areas and financial constraints.

The poor road network makes it very difficult for BLM to reach most deserving areas especially during the rainy season. The financial constraints is mostly on lack of adequate number of vehicles and additional funding for running costs to fully implement this innovation.
