NORPLANT
  What Is Norplant?

Norplant is one of the family planning methods for women and consists of six matchstick size plastic capsules which are put under the skin of a woman's arm.

Norplant can stay in the arm after insertion and prevent pregnancy for a period of up to five (5) years. However, any woman who wants to get pregnant before the end of (5) years can have the implants removed and become pregnant again.

  How Is Norplant Inserted?

The insertion of Norplant is a very simple procedure. A trained doctor or nurse places the Norplant under the skin of the woman's upper arm by making a very small incision. The insertion usually takes no more than ten minutes and the woman leaves the clinic immediately after the insertion and carry on with her daily activities. Norplant is inserted at any Banja La Mtsogolo Centre or some Government Hospitals.

  How Does Norplant Work?
Norplant stops the woman's egg from maturing every month.
  Who Can Use Norplant?

You may want to consider Norplant if:

1) You want to wait for at least three (3) to five (5) years before your next or first pregnancy.
2)  You or your partner use or do not want to use other methods of family planning like pills, condoms, IUCD or injectables.
3) You do not want any more children but feel a sterilization is not right for you or your partner at this time.
4) You have health problems that may make pregnancy unsafe.

  Advantages Of Norplant
1) Norplant prevents pregnancy for up to five (5) years and is very effective
2) It does not interrupt love making.
3) Women who want another child will return to their previous fertility almost immediately after the implants are removed.
4) Women of reproductive age group can use Norplant.
5) Breast feeding women can use Norplant six weeks after birth of the baby.
6) Women can decide to have Norplant removed at anytime.
  When Should Norplant Be Inserted?

Norplant insertion is done within the first seven (7) days from the start of the woman's menstrual period. Norplant can also be inserted six (6) weeks after the delivery of the baby even if the mother is breast feeding and has not yet started her periods. Overall, Norplant should be inserted when pregnancy is ruled out.

  When Should Norplant Be Removed?

The implants are removed by a trained doctor or nurse at any Banja La Mtsogolo Centre or some Government hospital whenever the woman wants to stop using the method or at the end of the five (5) years since the insertion.

Remember the following:

Only a trained doctor or nurse can insert or remove Norplant.
Some women may have irregular periods or no periods at all.
Some women with certain health problems cannot use Norplant.

Ask your family planning provider for more information.
